We have done our own research at MBI and discovered the Top 3 most reliable motorbikes. Less breakdowns and fewer surprise bills! It’s all very well rating a bike on factors such as looks or economy (we make that mistake with partners sometimes!) but how about reliability?
When it comes to the crunch reliability can provide great satisfaction and save more money in the long run than economy. Reliable two wheelers can also keep their value even when other bikes are seriously worn out, so if you are buying new or second hand choosing a reliable model or make can stand you in good stead for a stress free biking experience, leaving more money in your pocket to spend when you arrive – on time!
We carried out some research to find the most reliable bikes, so here are the top 3:-
1. Yamaha MT 01 (2005 onwards)
Now this is a big capacity bike at a current 1670cc so it’s not going to compete with many of the 125 models on fuel, but it will look (and sound) better in traffic and will be way more fun on the weekends. Build quality is high. A big engine and great sound can mean vibration, so keep all those nuts and bolts in check and she’ll rarely fail to show up for a date.
2. Honda VT125C Shadow (1999 onwards)
The shadow is a super reliable bike and a great low cc intro to cruisers (looks the part but easy to ride) the only downside will be when fellow larger cruisers leave you behind on the club rides. You can either leave early or lag behind (at least however you’ll be able to wave at all the breakdowns you pass on route!)
3. Honda CB1100 X11 (1999-2002)
This bigger Honda also shines in more ways than one. It is renowned for reliability and apparently the oil comes out looking near clean at service intervals! Another high build quality bike from Honda. Reports are that it’s not so great on handling corners, but let’s face it guys, those that buy reliable will be going slow to save on tyre wear!
So it’s clear, just as in the car sector that the Japanese names top the charts on reliability and what we like here is that none of these bikes look like your uncle’s old hand drill, they are all stylish and pleasurable with plenty of merit. Typically you will pay more for a reliable Jap bike. Parts and repairs will also be more costly when things go wrong… except… they generally don’t. We can also benefit from the fact that so many once foreign manufacturers have opted or are now opting for India as a base.
It’s logical that if a manufacturer is not shipping out a whole lot of replacement parts, if you do need something it will be more costly. It’s a simple matter of economies of scale and also applies to servicing. It’s also logical that good engineering, metal and machining/workmanship cost more.
We have all heard other owners boasting that the reason they ride a ‘XXXX’ is because ‘the parts are so cheap’ our question should be ‘how do you know?’ it’s like the trusty brush tale .. ‘Only three new handles and six new heads in 20 years!’
Break downs can mean — expenditure, lost work (even loss of a job), safety risks or even a missed family occasion, not to mention all that embarrassment on a ruined club ride, so it’s well worth factoring in reliability when you purchase any motorbike.
