My Way to Dapoli — Motorbike Route Story

I first heard the “THUMP”, when I was first barely five years of age. A very mischievous girl stopped in between her antics to listen to the engine that was approaching like a heartbeat drawing close. It was a Royal Enfield Bullet. Needless to say, it was ‘Love at First Sight’. The “THUMP” was branded into memory and dwelled there, a permanent resident, like my very breath. Since then I have not missed on any opportunity to date the Bullet.

One goes through the phases of life and gets busy. The dream that is so precious gets hidden under the mountain of mundane chores and commitments. Then one fine day, one decides to start living for oneself too. It was my turn. I decided to ride. A gift from me, to myself- riding, for me, is a meditation. It’s like music, sometimes fast and racy, while at the other times, gentle and cruising. The road and the ride decide the mood and the tempo.

Cut to the present

An amazing ride from Pune to Dapoli flagged off at Katraj.

Route : Pune – Bangalore Highway NH4 – Khed Shivapur – Wai Junction – turned right to Mahabaleshwar – Pauladpur Cross – Khed Naka – Turned right to Dhapoli – 15 kms ahead onto Dhapoli to the beachside resort.

Return route: Dapoli – Khed – NH17 – turned right to Bhor Ghat – Varanda Ghat – NH4 – Pune.

I was honoured to be able to join the ‘Roadshakers’, a Bullet riders club from Pune for this amazing ride. I rode the Electra 350 and got the opportunity to thump along with twenty riders, 19 Roadshakers and two Bikernis, Mrs. Snighda Chavan and myself.

We rode into the heart of the morning awakening the still sleepy road with our thumping. The luxury of riding on a clear road not infested with other traffic is a rarity. Ascending into the ghats the first golden spill of the morning sun welcomed us. The straight runs, the gentle curves, the steep u-turns, this ride provided me with great leaning. We were enveloped by the beautiful country side and the gorgeous mountain ranges along the way. For the first time I could feel my true passion, nothing but the road, the bike and me.

We reached Dapoli with the beautiful waters of the Arabian sea a stone’s throw away from our resort. We could find a better way to rest our feet than walk bare feet on the cold sand with water entwining our feet. What completed the day was a hearty home cooked meal at the resort. I never wanted to leave the place, but alas all good things come to an end. This was the end of the ride for me and time for me to return to the chaos of my city. The next day we were back on track heading for Pune.

This journey however left me craving for more; fuelling my passion for riding. And I shall soon be en route on another amazing journey; this time from Pune to Goa for India Bike Week.
